Learning Philosophy
¡Bienvenidos! Spanish I is a course designed to introduce students to the four language skills of communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as the Hispanic culture. The students will make connections with other subject areas; will make comparisons with their own language and culture.
Everyone will be encouraged to think and expected to speak in Spanish, rather than English. Students should spend considerable time studying at home to reinforce the daily class content. The amount of time that a student devotes to this subject will be directly proportional to the overall comprehension and acquisition of the Spanish Language and to the students success in the classroom.
Classroom Rules
In this class, you will be expected to obey the RRHS Code of Conduct and demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to engage in the acquisition of Spanish each day. Consequences for not following the academic & behavioral expectations will follow the RRHS Response to Interventions and will be reflected in their Student Responsibility & Behavior mark.

Laptop Policy and Procedure
5. Since we have primarily 9th and 10th grade students in Spanish 1, each will have his or her own computer. Other grade level students will be supplied with a computer from our floating laptop carts. Anytime a computer is being used in our classrooms, we will be actively and continually monitoring their use by walking around and observing the screens.
6. Most computer assignments in our classes will be of short duration and completed within one class period. We will often use our computers for repetitive drilling to reinforce the day’s lesson. At the end of satisfactory completion of an assignment (as specified by the teacher), the student will email his or her results to the teacher. Feedback to the student can range from grades for achieving a level required to assigning additional tutorial time to meet the requested level.
7. If a student is observed on a site not assigned in class, he or she will be taken off the computer for the day. An alternate assignment will be provided for class time and the computer assignment will have to be finished at home. A second offense will render the student unable to use the computer in class the remainder of the year.
Routine Procedures
1. Enter classroom calmly and sit in your assigned seat. Come prepared every day with computer, notebook, paper, writing utensil, and assigned work.
2. Each student should begin working on the warm up exercise and read the learning target, objectives, and criteria for success as soon as he/she enters the class.
3. Follow directions the first time they are given. Stay on task and use every minute wisely.
4. Stay in your seat until I dismiss class. Do not line up by the door before the bell.
Grading, Retake & Late Work Procedures
This class will follow the RRHS Grading Policy for grading, retesting, make-up work, missed assignments and assessments. No single assignment or assessment shall count for more than 30% of their total average. Please use Home Access to stay up to date on grades, missing work and attendance.

Academic Procedures
- A learning target and criteria for success will be given at the beginning of the period so that students know where they should be at the end of every class. I will assess your learning throughout the learning period. I will check for understanding throughout the period and provide feedback when necessary.
- Class discussion/presentations: listen respectfully to what others say. Please do not interrupt. If you have a different point of view, please express it politely (I agree because... or I disagree because)
- Teacher directed lesson: clear your desks of everything but interactive notebook and pen or pencil. Consider waiting for an appropriate break to ask questions or offer a comment.
- Independent/group work - have all necessary books, paper, pens, pencils, and other materials on your desk; begin working on assignment as soon as you receive it.
